The Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra fuctions as an orthodox monastery, where the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky are kept. Here many members of the Royal Family, statesmen, clergymen and outstanding commanders were buried.
The museum of City Sculpture was founded in 1939 with the purpose of calculation, protection and restoration of the outstanding monuments, monumental and decorative art structures and tombstones. Under the protection of the museum there are more than 400 city monuments and 1500 commemorative plaques.
They represent some kind of a pantheon of prominent figures of the national history and culture. Here the relatives of Peter I, B.P. Sheremetev, I.A. Hannibal, M.V. Lomonosov, A.V.Suvorov, D.I. Fonvizin, N.M. Karamzin, I.A .Krylov, I. E. Starov, A.N. Vorohin, A. D.Zaharov, K.I. Rossi, J.F. Thomas de Thomon, F.I. Shubin, M.I. Kozlovsky, I.P. Martos, V.I. Demuth-Malinovsky, S.S. Pimenov, B. I. Orlovsky, P.K. Klodt, V.L. Borovikovskii, M.I. Glinka,M.P. Mussorgsky, P.I. Tchaikovsky, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, A.A. Ivanov, P.A. Fedotov, A.I. Kuindzhi, B. M. Kustodiev, F. M. Dostoyevsky, M.I. Petipa, P. A. Strepetova, V. F. Komissarzhevskay and many others were buried. The gravestones of the necropolis, made by the prominent architects and sculptors are of great artistic value.
On the territory of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in the museum are included:
- Church of the Annunciation (1724-1725)
- Church of Saint Lazarus (1717, 1787 – 1789.)
- Necropolis of the 18th century (Lasarevskoye Cemetery);
- Necropolis of the Masters of Arts (Tikhvin Cemetery). The admission is free for all pilgrims and tourists all the time. On the territory of Lavra operate the Museum of City Sculpture – the Necropolis of the 18th century and the Necropolis of the Masters of Arts (the Memorial Park).The guided tour with an Orthodox guide includes visiting the monastery, the central Holy Trinity Cathedral and other churches, the cemetery. You will learn about the history and the significance of the monastery in the life of the city and of Russia, about the revered saints and miracle-working icons, its ascetics and abbots and the current state of the monastery. For the foreigners the tour is conducted in English.
Necropolis of the 18th century and the Necropolis of the Masters of Art are open daily: 10:00 to 17:30, ticket office is open until 17:00.
